Hope Exchange - Assistant Director Job Description

If you would like to combine your love of children with a summer job opportunity, here's Good News: St. Ann's Episcopal Church seeks applicants who are interested in serving as the Assistant Director of East Nashville Hope Exchange Summer Program 2007.

The EN Hope Exchange Assistant Director assists the Director and is responsible for program delivery and participates in the planning and implementation of program activities. The Assistant Director is a full-time position and reports to the Director or, when he or she is not available, reports to the EN Hope Exchange Board of Directors.

The Assistant Director’s specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Strive to create and sustain a respectful and supportive environment where the gifts, hopes and dreams of staff, children and caregivers are nurtured and cultivated
  • Provide overall coordination of all program activities
  • Help prepare and conduct the two-week pre-program staff training
  • Help prepare and coordinate the student enrolment process
  • Work closely with the staff in coordinating and carrying out the EN Hope Exchange Caregiver Orientation Dinner
  • Cheerfully greet guest readers
  • Oversee breakfast
  • Oversee lunch
  • Coordinate snacks
  • Lead Harambee (the morning celebration)
  • Help students on a one-on-one basis with reading, writing, and problem-solving
  • Each day, communicate with the EN Hope Exchange Director to ensure that all afternoon activities are planned, staff and volunteers have tasks assigned, etc.
  • Each day, compose and distribute an afternoon schedule to EN Hope Exchange Director and staff
  • Oversee afternoon volunteers
  • Provide supervision and monitor the safety of all children and staff
  • Relieve the EN Hope Exchange Director when he or she needs a break
  • Attend daily staff debrief meetings to gather feedback from staff, assign staff responsibilities, and plan for the following day
  • Help children write, practice and perform acts for the EN Hope Exchange Summer Finale
  • Help provide an atmosphere of hope, safety, and peace among the EN Hope Exchange family

Qualifications:

  • Must have or be working towards a Bachelor’s degree
  • Demonstrate successful administrative and supervisory experience, preferably in an organized program or camp
  • Be comfortable assuming a leadership role when necessary
  • Must like children – you’re going to be spending a lot of time with them
  • Must be able to interact happily and comfortably with children, parents, and colleagues – that’s how learning happens!
  • Experienced in working with children
  • Able to connect and communicate effectively with parents
  • Experienced in working well with colleagues
  • Able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Able to plan, originate, organize and carry out daily and special programs
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrated team building and problem solving skills
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to help mana ge a nine person staff
  • Patient, energetic, creative, dependable, and having a good sense of humor
  • Able to maintain an attitude of respect, courtesy, tact, and maturity

The EN Hope Assistant Director will begin work June 1, 2009. The staff will have two weeks of training (June 1 - June 14, including Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 14). The five-week summer program will be held June 15- July 17, 7:30 am 4:00 pm. Weekly Caregiver Empowerment Dinners are held each Tuesday, 6:00 pm 7:30 pm. Following the program, the entire staff participates in a week of program assessment and reflection (July 20 - 24).
