Hope Exchange - Teacher Job Description

If you would like to combine your love of children with a summer job opportunity, here's Good News: St. Ann's Episcopal Church seeks applicants to teach children at East Nashville Hope Exchange Summer Program 2009. While not necessarily certified to teach, EN Hope Exchange Teachers are creative, energetic people who provide safe, secure, enriching experiences to EN Hope Exchange participants. Teachers work full-time and report to the Director or, when he or she is not available, to the EN Hope Exchange Program Coordinator.

A Teacher’s specific duties include but are not limited to the following:

  • Strive to create and sustain a respectful and supportive environment where the gifts, hopes and dreams of staff, children and caregivers are nurtured and cultivated
  • Responsible for overall coordination of all literacy-related classroom activities during the mornings
  • Attend the two-week pre-program staff training
  • Participate in the student enrolment process
  • Work closely with the staff in coordinating and carrying out the EN Hope Exchange Caregiver Orientation Dinner
  • Cheerfully greet parents and students
  • Supervise children during breakfast
  • Participate in creating a lively atmosphere during Harambee (the morning celebration)
  • Each day, coordinate with the EN Hope Exchange Teacher Assistant to ensure that all classroom activities are planned, carried out, and that both the Teacher and Teacher Assistant have assigned classroom roles, r esponsibilities, tasks, etc.
  • Help students on a one-on-one basis with reading, writing, and problem-solving
  • Work closely with the staff and volunteers to help supervise afternoon activities, and weekly field trips
  • Ensure that children always have direct supervision and are never left unattended
  • Attend daily staff debrief meetings to offer constructive feedback and help plan for the following day
  • Take the lead in implementing EN Hope Exchange classroom management procedures
  • Help children w rite, practice and perform acts for the EN Hope Exchange Summer Finale
  • Help provide an atmosphere of hope, safety, and peace among the EN Hope Exchange family

Qualifications:

  • Must have or are working towards a Bachelor’s degree
  • Must like children – you’re going to be spending a lot of time with them
  • Must be able to interact happily and comfortably with children, parents, and colleagues – that’s how learning happens!
  • Experience working with children and the ability to effectively connect and comm unicate with parents
  • Experience working well with colleagues
  • Must clap, dance, sing, and chant along with the EN Hope Exchange cheers and songs (you’ll come to love them, we promise!)
  • Must be able to work in both indoor and outdoor settings
  • Ability to plan, originate, organize and carry out daily and special programs
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Demonstrate team building and problem solving skills
  • Must have strong leadership skills, patience, energy, creativity, a good sense of humor
  • Must maintain an attitude of respect, courtesy, tact, and maturity

The EN Hope Exchange staff will have two weeks of training (June 1 - June 14, including Saturday, June 6 and Sunday, June 14). The five-week summer program will be held June 15 - July 17, 7:30 am 4:00 pm. Weekly Caregiver Empowerment Dinners are held each Tuesday, 6:00 pm 7:30 pm. Following the end of the program, the entire staff participates in a week of assessment and reflection (July 20 - 24).
